Anyone would have loved to have discovered Villefranche sur Mer in the South of France. This beautiful piece of land b the sea, was spotted by the ancient Greek and Roman sailors as a naturally sheltered bay. Barbary pirates also spotted this spot and made it into a pirates hangout. Times were however never quite nor secure in Villefranche sur Mer. Villefranche-sur-Mer was often besieged by different kings, counts and emperors. The Roman Emperor Charles the V and French King Francis the I met in Villefranche sur Mer to make an end to the pfighting and come to a truce. Villefranche sur Mer was later fortified by the Italian royal family of Savoy, who made it into their Duchy on the sea. Villefranche-sur-Mer changed hands again and was annexed by the Austrians, Spaniards and the French. The French King Louis XIV was the one who reinforced the town. Towards the end of the 19th century the people of Villefranche sur Mer voted for annexation to France. It was still a port and a place of trade. It became a touristic luxury spot a bit later when Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna discovered its beauty. If your town is good enough for the Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, your town is good enough for everybody. Since the arrival of the Tsarina, Villefranche sur Mer in the South of France has only developed further into the glamorous place it is today.
