At the beginning of the 1900 hundreds, Mandelieu was only a village with 984 inhabitants, including 200 in Napoule and only 50 in Theoule. Mandelieu is a tiny little village on the Cote d' Azur and not until 1910 became more of a place to visit. This was predominantly the result of a small tram track that was build between Cannes and Mandelieu. Allthough other place in the South of France became more popular, it was not until after the first world war that Mandelieu became more popular. It might have all started when the ruins of the castle of Mandelieu were bought by an American artist by the name of Henry Clews Ths painter and sculptor entirely rebuild the residence seigneuriale of Villeneuve. The name of Mandelieu was Mandeluec. The Romans transformed it into Mantolvocus, Mandolocus or Manduolocus. In the Middle Ages, Mandelieu took its current name. which simply means: a place of mandement, i.e. a place of command where the chief resides. Mandeluec was the residence which stretched from Arluc (Saint-Cassien) passing by Epulia (Napoule) and Theole (Theoule) upto Esterel. Epulia (Napoule) counted only some houses of fishermen. After the destruction of Avignonet, the family of Villeneuve which was the land owner, build a new castle in Epulia and Epulia took the name of Napoule. The inhabitants of Avignonet followed their lords of the manor and thus constituted the village. Mandelieu in South France is a fantastic little village.
